*Typical kit prices as of October 2026; kit sizes and prices vary by store. Totals assume standard results. You can also split a kit across shipments: each sample's $39 is due only when you send it in, and each shipment needs its own outdoor control and $10 label.
Build any size kit. On MyMoldDetective.com, add the samples you want by type: air cassette $5.97, tape lift $2.97, swab $1.99. Buy 3 and save 10%; buy 5 and save 20%. Lab analysis is still $39 per sample.

Two things that shape your total
Every air test needs an outdoor control
The lab rates your indoor air as Normal, Slightly Elevated, or Elevated by comparing it with outdoor air taken within the same hour. So every set of air samples you send includes one outdoor air sample, billed at $39 like any other.
Each room you add lowers the cost per room
An air test starts at two samples: your outdoor control plus one indoor air sample. Every room you add shares that same outdoor control and $10 label, so each room costs less. That's why most customers test several rooms on their first go, about four samples on average.
Lab and label cost per room
Your outdoor control plus indoor air samples at $39 each, and one $10 return label, divided by the rooms you test.

Lab fees
How much does lab analysis cost?
Lab analysis is $39 per sample, and you choose how many samples to analyze. You pay when you register your samples online, before you mail them. An air test starts at two samples (your outdoor control plus one indoor air sample), and the average customer sends about four.
Is the lab fee included in the kit price?
No. The kit price covers the collection equipment: the reusable air pump and your sample collectors. Lab analysis is a separate $39 per sample, paid only when you submit samples. Keeping it separate lowers your upfront cost, and you pay only for the analyses you want.
Why is lab analysis billed separately?
Your samples are analyzed by a nationally accredited laboratory that charges per sample. Every home needs a different number of samples, so a single built-in fee would mean paying for analyses you may never use.
Do I have to analyze every sample?
No. Analysis is à la carte at $39 per sample. An air test needs at least two samples, your outdoor control plus one indoor air sample, and most customers test several rooms on their first go because each added room lowers the cost per room. Collectors you don't use store for weeks or months, and you pay the $39 only when you send a sample in.
Why do I pay to analyze the outdoor sample?
Indoor results only mean something next to outdoor air. The lab compares each indoor sample with your outdoor control to rate it Normal, Slightly Elevated, or Elevated, and it charges for every sample it analyzes, indoor or outdoor. Outdoor levels change constantly, so each set of air samples needs its own fresh outdoor control.
Kits & samples
How many samples come in each kit?
Mold Test Kit (1-Room): 3 samples. 2-Room: 5. 3-Room: 8. 4-Room: 9. 5-Room: 12. 6-Room: 13. Every kit includes one outdoor control, and air samples are universal, so you can use any of them indoors or as the control. The table above lists each kit's full breakdown. Kit sizes vary by store, and on MyMoldDetective.com you can build your own by adding the samples you want by type.
What is the total cost to test my home?
Add three things: the kit price, $39 for each sample you analyze, and a $10 prepaid label for each shipment. Analyzing all 5 samples in the 2-Room kit is $279.99 all-in; the 4-Room kit tops out at $455.99 and the 6-Room at $621.99. The more indoor air samples you send together, the lower your cost per room, because they all share one outdoor control and one label.
Why choose a larger kit?
Larger kits aren't just for large homes. Because air samples are universal and unused collectors store for weeks or months, a bigger kit lets you test in sessions: two properties, different seasons, or before and after remediation. You pay the $39 only when you send a sample in.
Can I add more samples later?
Yes. The air pump is reusable, and extra collectors are sold separately: air cassette $5.97, tape lift $2.97, swab $1.99 (buy 3 and save 10%, buy 5 and save 20%). Each one is $39 to analyze when you send it in.
Do the sample collectors expire?
Unused collectors store for weeks or months until you're ready. Each has a best-by date, and stored in a climate-controlled space they're typically usable up to a year past it.
Shipping & results
What does it cost to send my samples to the lab?
A flat-rate, trackable $10 prepaid label covers each shipment to the lab, and one label sends every sample in that box. It's charged when you register your samples online. Shipping the kit to you is quoted by the store or site where you buy it.
How long do results take?
You receive a digital lab report within 3 business days of the lab receiving your samples. Need it sooner? Next-business-day analysis is $15 more per sample. Express is all or nothing: it applies to every sample in that shipment.
How is this different from cheaper mold test kits?
Inexpensive petri-dish kits only confirm that some mold is present. My Mold Detective uses professional air sampling and a nationally accredited laboratory to identify 20–30 mold genera, including Stachybotrys (black mold), with quantified spore counts and a shareable digital report. It's the method professionals use, without paying for a professional inspection.
